The Youth Red Cross orientation programme was held on February 13, 2021 with an intention to make aware of the various concepts and aspects of YRC for Ist year B. Com, BBA, BCA and B.Sc. students at the PESIAMS Seminar Hall. The Programme was presided over by Dr. K Sailatha, Principal of PESIAMS, Shivamogga. Dr. Reshma, Assistant Professor, Government Firsst Grade College, Shimoga and Dr. Balkrishna Hegde, Professor, Kamala Nehru Women College Shimogawere the resource persons for that programme.
Dr. Reshma at the event called students to work beyond their academics by engaging in social service. Speaking about the life and work of Mr. Henry Dunant- the founder of Red Cross, she recommended students to take people like him, Gandhi and Mother Teresa as role models. She urged them to inculcate the values of Red Cross such as humanitarianism, equality, neutrality, freedom, unity in diversity and universality. YRC volunteers have been playing a significant role during critical situations like natural calamities and accidental disasters.
National Service Scheme- the brainchild of Mahatma Gandhi came into existence in 1969 with the mission of inculcating and promoting the values of service, dedication, hygiene and knowledge. This is an exclusive platform and opportunity for students to engage themselves in social service thereby contribute to the greater good of the nation. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has held high hopes on the youth of the nation in realizing his dream of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharath’. Hence, it is imperative for the youth to dedicate themselves to render their service through activities like blood donation, eye donation etc.” said Dr. Balakrishna Hegde. He also suggested that volunteering under NSS will ease getting admission to postgraduate courses as there is a provision of awarding additional credit points for such activities.
Dr. K Sailatha, Principal, PESIAMS presiding the program asserted the words of resource persons and encouraged students to act in their capacity in bettering society. Dr. GM Sudarshan, Head, Department of Commerce and Management, Mrs. Roopa DS, Head, Department of Computer Science, Dr. Dileep, Coordinator, PG Department of Commerce, Mr. Sathish, NSS Officer, Mr. Praveen, YRC Officer, teaching and non-teaching staff of the college were present on the occasion.
