About the Department & Course

The Department of Information Science and Engineering was established in 2007 and offers a Bachelor of Engineering Program. Information Science's primary aim is to converge the knowledge about the design, development and implementation of various solutions to collect, store, and categorise information. Being an interdisciplinary field, it combines the knowledge of different domains, including mathematics, computer science, social science, management, etc. The students learn the processing and interpretation of raw data to make use of them for productive purposes. The course equips the students with the right knowledge to design, develop, test, and maintain a software system and at the same time handle real-time situations.

As Defined by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA):

    Engineering knowledge:Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialisation for the solution of complex engineering problems.

    Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, research literature, and analyse complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.

    Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety and cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

    Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.

    Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modelling to complex engineering activities, with an understanding of the limitations.

    The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal, and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.

    Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.

    Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.

    Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.

    Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with the society at large such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.

    Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.

    Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.

Analyse the logic, Algorithms and information systems to enable the students to design and implement the software.

Evaluate working of Hardware and Software aspects of the computer using appropriate tools.

Apply the standard practices in software development to deliver quality products.

CN/ML/Project Laboratory

Lab Occupied an area of 75 Sq. M.

  • Lab consists of 28 good configuration computers with the specifications of 4GB RAM, 1TB Hard disk and an Intel core i5 processor.
  • Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64 bit Operating system has been installed for all systems as per requirement.

  • Development Tools like Anaconda, Netbeans, JDK and ns-allinone are installed in the systems for Lab conduction as per academic requirement.
  • Computer Networks/ Machine Learning/ Python/ Data structure/projects are conducted here.
DBMS/WEB/FS/ADA Laboratory
  • Lab Occupied the area of 75 Sq. M
  • The Lab consists of 28 good configuration computers with the specifications of 4GB RAM, 1TB Hard disk AND Intel core i5 processor.
  • Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64 bit Operating system has been installed for all systems as per requirement.
  • Development Tools like Apache Tomcat, Netbeans, JDK, MySQL are installed in the systems for Lab conduction as per academic requirement.
  • File Structure/ Algorithm Lab/ DBMS/ JAVA/Web are conducted here.
ADE Laboratory
  • The Lab occupied an area of 75 Sq. M
  • The Lab consists of Electronic components called CRO’s, Signal Generators, Trainer kits, DC Power supply, Digital Multimeters, Voltmeters and Ammeters as per academic requirements.
  • Analog & Digital electronics lab and Microcontroller labs are conducted here.
DS/MP/ST Laboratory
  • The Lab occupied an area of 75 Sq. M
  • The Lab consists of 29 good configuration computers with the specifications of 1GB RAM, 160GB Hard disk and Intel Dual core processor.
  • Windows-7 64 bit Operating system has been installed for all systems as per requirement.
  • Development Tools like Multism, Modelism, KEIL, Vision-4, Flash Magic, MASM are installed in the systems for Lab conduction as per academic requirements.
  • Lab consists of equipment such as a stepper motor, Logic Controller, 7-Segment Display, Elevator Kits, Power supply and CRO.
  • Mastering Office/ Software Testing/ Microcontroller Labs are conducted here.

Research and Development

Focus of Research:Student’s experiences in higher education go far beyond the curriculum in their programs. Beyond the classroom walls there are social activities and numerous other opportunities to gain unique skills and experiences. One such opportunity is for students to become involved in research. This could be in the form of a paid Internship, volunteering in a SRICHID Innovation Lab, or completing a multidisciplinary project. The Department already collaborated with PraLotech LLP, Bangalore and Contriver solutions, Bangalore. Every Academic year two to three final Project batches engage themselves in Industry Interaction Research Project in association with Sixaxis Ltd, Bangalore.
The departments of ISE have two VTU Research Supervisors who are guiding Research Scholars on various domains like Machine Learning, IoT and Cloud Computing, Image Classification etc. Few Faculties already registered for PhD and published papers in reputed Journals.
