NSS aims at developing a student personality through community service and a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community linkage; the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India launched a public service program called National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS. The first programme was launched by the Government of India in Gandhiji’s centenary year in 1969.
The idea of the National Service Scheme (NSS) was first proposed by Major General Jagannath Rao Bhonsle. Later, the University Grants Commission (UGC), headed by S. Radhakrishnan, through its recommendation sought the implementation of voluntary national service in academic institutions. After going through the experiences of various countries of the world the Central Advisory Board of Education recommended that students and teachers should devote time to voluntary manual work.
In PESITM, the NSS unit was established in 2007, focusing on teaching the social service attitude to students and serving society as a daily routine activity. Our NSS unit was affiliated with and recognized by VTU, Belagavi. The programme aims to instil social welfare ideas in students and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. The volunteers learn from people in villages how to lead a good life despite scarce resources. It also provides help in natural and man-made disasters by providing food, clothing and first aid to the disaster's victims. Also, we aim to give a technical touch to the set of activities performed under the NSS banner to serve society in an all-around manner by attempting to solve the issues at the grassroots level.
In PESITM, from an academic year point of view, an NSS committee will be formed with the Principal as the Chairman and the faculty member as the Programme Officer. Faculty members from each department or on a collective basis will be the members of the NSS committee. Almost 100 student volunteers will be selected from each department to carry out the allotted NSS activities during the present academic year. The NSS unit works with the responsibilities of developing a sense of social and civic responsibility among students for using this knowledge to find practical solutions to individual and community problems and acquiring the leadership qualities and democratic attitude that results in developing community service attitude during emergencies and natural disasters.
