Aimed at developing student's personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community linkage; the Ministry of Youth Affair’s and Sports of Government of India launched a public service program called National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS. This program was first launched by the Government of India in Gandhiji’s centenary year in 1969.
The idea of National Service Scheme (NSS) was first proposed by Major General Jagannath Rao Bhonsle. Later, the University Grants Commission (UGC), headed by S. Radhakrishnan, through its recommendation sought the implementation of voluntary national service in academic institutions. After going through the experiences of various countries of the world the Central Advisory Board of Education recommended that students and teachers should devote time to voluntary manual work.
In PESITM, the NSS unit was established in 2007 with the aim of inculcating the social service attitude in the minds of the students thereby serving the society a daily routine activity. Our NSS unit was affiliated to and recognized by VTU, Belagavi. The programme aims to instilling the idea of social welfare in students, and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone who is needy gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. In doing so, volunteers learn from people in villages how to lead a good life despite a scarcity of resources. It also provides help in natural and man-made disasters by providing food, clothing and first aid to the disaster's victims. Also, our aim is to give technical touch to the set of activities performed under the NSS banner for serving society in an all – round manner by making an attempt to solve the issues at grass root level.
In PESITM, from academic year point of view, a NSS committee will be formed with the Principal being the Chairman and faculty member as the Programme Officer. Faculty members from each department or on a collective basis will be the members of NSS committee. In total, a group of 100 student volunteers will be selected from each department for carrying out the allotted NSS activities during the present academic year. The NSS unit will work with the responsibilities of developing a sense of social and civic responsibility among students; utilizing student’s knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems; also acquiring the leadership qualities and democratic attitude that results in developing community service attitude during emergencies and natural disasters.
