About the Department

The department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 2013. The present intake for the undergraduate program is 60 and is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi and approved by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi (AICTE). The department is actively involved in research and development and is a recognized research centre under VTU. B.E in Civil Engineering program is accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The Civil Engineering department is keen on imparting value-based education, with experienced faculties, modern computing and laboratory facilities.

Site Visits, Hands-on Trainings, and Add-on courses have been a part of teaching – learning process along with the regular curriculum. The department focuses on imparting outcome based education, ensuring the overall personality development of a student.

About the Civil Engineering

A personal space for living, a transport facility for commute, commercial or business place for employment and livelihood is an essential part of day-to-day life, all of which is essentially administered by a Civil Engineer. Considered to be the mother of all engineering disciplines, Civil Engineering has co-existed from the time of ancient Civilization. In fact, there is no civilization without Civil Engineering. From the stone era to nano technology, Civil Engineering has seen enormous growth in terms of both advancements in materials and construction techniques. IT interventions in Civil Engineering has become the new norm to an extent that, artificial intelligence in Civil Engineering is being explored and adopted. Being one of the three core disciplines, Civil Engineering is fulfilling all the necessities of developing economy as well as human comfort and will remain significant till human existence.

Salient Features

State of art laboratories and facilities available to students, enabling hands-on experience in areas like Concrete and Highway Material Testing, Building Material Testing, Fluid Mechanics, Environmental Engineering, Computer Aided Design (CAD).
Students are provided with Career development training, workshops, seminars, Student development activities and alumni networking events that enhance students' job readiness and industry connections.
The department also offers consultancy services in major areas of Civil Engineering domain.
The department has Eight memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the industries and training institutes, leading to skill development of the students and placements.
Student projects will receive financial assistance from agencies like KSCST, VTU etc...
The students of the department are encouraged to participate in the Curricular and Co-curricular activities.
The Department library provides sufficient books for reference for faculties and students.
Faculty members are publishing high quality research work in Peer reviewed Journals, Books and Book Chapters

Civil Engineering Graduates within 3-5 years of Graduation should:

Function effectively as Civil Engineering Professionals in the field of Construction, Infrastructure Development and Architecture.

As Defined by National Board of Accreditation (NBA):-

Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization for the solution of complex engineering problems.

Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.

Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety and cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.

Program Assessment Committee

Program Assessment Committee of Department of Civil Engineering was initially formed on 19/09/2016 with the following Roles and Responsibilities.

Committee shall meet, twice a year, before commencement of every semester to discuss academic plan of action.
The committee shall identify the gaps in the curriculum and industry requirements and put forward the suggestions to bridge the gap between industry and institution.
Committee shall monitor the progress with respect to attainment and put forward suggestions for improvement.
Committee shall prepare the planned teaching & learning processes and submit to Department Advisory Board for consent.

Practice of OBE

Outcome based education is a philosophy of imparting knowledge and skills with specific and measurable parameters. It is goal-oriented approach with targets for outcomes and scope for improvement.

At department of Civil Engineering the outcome-based education is achieved by following means:

Teaching – Learning: One of the primary tools for achieving the desired outcome is through class room teaching. Along with conventional method, following aspects are also executed for enhanced quality of learning
- Visual Aids – Use of presentations, Pictorial representations, Videos & Animations helps for better understanding
- Experiential Learning – Hands on experience is provided for students to validate the knowledge gained
- Activities & Assignments – Student activities involves being relevant with present day context through exploration and self-learning.
Value Added Trainings: Academic curriculum is not sufficient to meet the industry requirements, which are usually fulfilled through value added trainings. Some of the trainings being undertaken are

Dr. Nandan N Shenoy was External examiner and evaluator of the Ph.D thesis “Parametric analysis on robber latex modified concrete with partial replacement of coarse aggregate by crushed brick.” of ICFAI University Tripura in the year 2023.
Ms. Divya H A has presented a paper titled “Land Use landcover mapping and change detection using geo-spatial technique” in the National Conference On “Recent Trends in Earth Science and GeoInformatics Application In Engineering Practices” held during 9th and 10th of March 2022 at Dept. Of Earth Science, University of Mysore, Manasa Gangotri, Mysore.
Mrs. Yajnodbhavi H M has presented a paper titled “Experimental Studies On Fiber Reinforced High Strength M80-GRADE Concrete” in the “International conference on engineering innovation (ICEI 2022)” organized by the Jain Institute Of Technology, Davangere, India on 3rd June 2022.

Dr. M.N. Hiremath has presented a paper on design and fabrication of indigenous low carbon prepared from low-cost materials in Bangalore Humanitarian technology conference at IEEE Indexed by Google Scholar.
Dr. Vinay D C was a resource person for the technical session organized by AICTE Sponsored Short Term Training Program on 27/11/2020. He has also published a paper on performance of HEC-HMS and SWAT to simulate streamflow in the sub-humid tropical Hemavati in the journal of water and climate change by international water association indexed by Web of Science SCIE: 1.254 Scopus 1.708.
Mr. Rakesh M K has given a presentation on “ONE DAY NBA TRAINING” for the teaching faculties of Kalpataru Institute of Technology, Tiptur on 05/10/2020.
Mrs. Yajnodbhavi H M has published a paper on “Mix design of M30 grade concrete for rural roads as per IRC 44-2017 in the journal of recent activities in infrastructure science e-ISSN: 2582-3124 Volume 5, Issue 1, Jan-April 2020 at MAT journals by Google Scholar.
Mr. Sunil Kumar has shared his knowledge in a session on “Simple Beam and Frame Analysis and Design” as a resource person for a one-week Short Term Training Program on “STAAD Pro” under CEP program for Government Engineers from 15-07-2019 to 19-07-2019 at JNNCE Shivamogga.
Dr. Nandan N Shenoy has delivered a lecture on “Incineration and Composting Technique for Solid Waste Management” in a session as a resource person for a one-week Short Term Training Program on “SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT” under CEP program for Government Engineers from 07-01-2019 to 11-01-2019 at JNNCE, Shivamogga.

Mr. Vikas B Naik has participated and secured first place in the event CAAD in CIVIL-TECH FEST 2022, held on 15th and 16th December 2022, by the department of civil engineering, SJM Institute of Technology, Chitradurga.
Mr. Muindduin Chopdar, student of 6th semester has successfully completed NPTEL course on WATER SUPPLY ENGINEERING “with a score of 55% and “MODERN CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS” with a score of 66%.
Mr. Mithun K M & Mr. Vinod Pushpagiri have participated and secured first prize in the event “CAAD” in “TECHNIE’19” a national level technical fest which was organized by JAIN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, Davangere.
GATE is an entrance exam conducted for admission into the master’s program and job in public sector companies. And in this examination, Mr. Mohamed Ismail S has qualified GATE-2018, with the score of 27.10.
